Excerpt from Donnie’s Book!

To uncover the truth about the gift of tongues, we’ll need to look at two passages of scripture, Acts 1-2 and 1 Corinthians 12-14. Both passages are favorite scriptures used by today’s faith movement but for the life of me, I don’t understand why. Neither passage parallels or compliments the other nor will either validate the faith movement’s faulty theology about tongues. The fact is Luke and Paul are actually discussing two different subjects. In the Book of Acts, Luke’s message is to characterize the Acts of the Apostles in the early Church. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, on the other hand, is to correct the terrible confusion in that church over gifts of the Spirit. Nevertheless, faith teachers vainly attempt to tie the two passages together by jumping back and forth from Acts to 1 Corinthians, a verse here and one there, as they deceptively manipulate the scripture. Ironically, when those two passages are read separately and in context, they actually contradict the false theology of the faith movement and reveal the heresy of their so-called speaking in tongues theology. Maybe that’s the reason they never read them in context. What do you think?

People caught-up in the faith movement are not only confused, they are also fearful. Most are actually afraid to question the faith teacher or speak negatively against anything he teaches, so he is free to teach anything he desires, even heresy, which many teach today. How do they get by with it? Easy! Keep in mind, faith teachers claim to be hearing directly from the Holy Spirit, so to question the faith teacher or speak negatively against his message; well, we know what happens to those who speak against the Spirit, don’t we? So you get the picture! The fear of blaspheming the Spirit keeps those people held in bondage to the faith teacher. I know because, when I broke from the faith movement, some used that fear tactic on me, so I know what that fear is all about. I was to the point of having to take sleeping pills to get some sleep. The verse that brought me out from under their terrible oppression of fear was 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. An immediate peace came over me and God delivered me from the fear tactics and the false theology of the faith movement. Praise His Name! Since then, it has been my goal to help others escape that ungodly movement. This is the main reason for publishing this study on the truth about speaking in tongues.

The way I got involved in the faith movement to begin with was that I had a friend who was heavily involved in the Charismatic movement. He had been a member of the Pentecostal-Holiness church for years but he too was searching for answers. That within itself should have told me something about his spiritual depth and the spiritual depth of the faith movement but I was a young Christian. How was I to know? I had a lot to learn. Together, my friend and I would visit different faith-based church services, prayer meetings, Bible studies, it didn’t matter. I was eager and anxious to learn what the Bible said, especially if the subject matter was tongues. My friend and faith teachers had convinced me that it was something I needed in order to be baptized with the Spirit. My eagerness outran my biblical education. This was something that my friend took advantage of just as faith teachers do with other young Christians today. I was continually being pressured to speak in tongues. “You need to receive the baptism of the Spirit, with evidence of speaking in tongues”. If I heard that statement once, I heard it a thousand times, especially from those putting pressure on me. It seemed that their whole world revolved around me receiving tongues and they were not going to be satisfied until I did, so to add to my already confused condition, I also had to carry around tremendous guilty because I had not been baptized with the Spirit. This was something that I desperately wanted but being a young Christian I didn’t know that I had already been baptized with the Spirit. The truth is, when a person is saved, he is immediately baptized with the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ and is made fully complete in Christ Jesus. (Col. 2:9-10)

They never did push me into speaking in tongues but their insistence that I must did push me into digging and searching through the scripture. At first, I set out to prove them wrong but that only led to us arguing… Tired of arguing, I finally told myself that I would stop debating with my friends and instead look for scriptures to try to prove them right. When I started doing that, my eyes were open and what I discovered amazed me. What a surprise, I discovered the truth. Though I searched with all that was possible, I absolutely could not find any scriptures to prove my friend’s theology right. Yes, you heard me right! Try as I might, I could not find a single verse to confirm what my friends had been teaching me about tongues. So what did that mean? It meant that I was on the road to freedom. The door was opened for me to come out from under bondage. A load had been lifted off my back. Finally the burdens of guilt, fear and confusion were gone.
